Your Sommelier Course Level 1
in Wines at a Glance. Tasting of a Minimum 40 selected Wines and 20 Spirits. The Course Lasts 9 Lessons, a minimum of 36 hours correspondent to 48 Learning Modules. Written exam 120 Minutes. We offer three different possibilities. Weekend – We meet during the weekends, Saturday and Sunday mornings. After 5 weeks, we end with the exam. Matinee – We meet in the mornings (11:00) once a week during 9 weeks. The exam will be week 10. Afternoon – We meet once a week in the afternoon, at a timing that is suitable for the group, during 9 weeks. The exam will be week 10. The flag on the right shows the language in which each course is taught.

About the course

Level 1 is an introductory course for wine enthusiasts, offering a structured overview of wine production and how it influences taste. It’s suitable for hobbyists wanting to expand their knowledge as well for those seeking a career in the wine industry. The course covers basic product knowledge, wine service, and retail skills, preparing individuals for entry-level jobs in hospitality, retail, or wine marketing. Each lesson includes professional wine tastings, focusing on recognizing quality, sensory characteristics, wine descriptions, and using the tasting card. We offer three options for taking the course; during Weekend, Morning or Afternoon. All three consist of 9 meetings plus exam.

Entry requirements

There are no requirements for candidates to have previous knowledge or previous experience of alcoholic beverages but Students have to be 18 years or older at the starting day of the course

What you will learn

  • Each lesson has a theoretical introduction and selected wines from around the world to deepen your knowledge and illustrate the lesson’s topic.
  • You will expand your vocabulary and ability to recognize and describe different wines.
  • Under guided supervision, you will train your senses to recognize and identify different aromas.
  • You will learn technical sensory analysis with a deeper introduction to the perception and use of all the senses.
  • You will receive a technical glossary in different languages.
  • You will learn how to store, serve and handle wine correctly, as well as formal etiquette.
  • We will teach you the basics of agronomy, oenology and vinification.
  • You will learn the differences and definitions of different types of wines, such as orange, rosé, sparkling, fortified, natural, etc.
  • You will gain deeper knowledge of low-alcohol and alcohol-free wines.
  • We will give you an introduction to and tasting of different spirits from around the world.
  • We will provide in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical exercises in recognizing and defining different faults in wine.
  • You will learn about European and international legislation.
  • We will cover health aspects and the dangers of alcohol consumption, health regulations and rules.
  • We will walk you through the basics of food and wine pairing, based on your personal characteristics and organoleptic receptors.
  • Under the guidance of our professional teachers, you will learn more about the characteristics of wines and develop together with your classmates.

The Course Organization

During 9 lessons, you will learn to recognize the different characteristics of wine. Under the guidance of our professional teachers, you will train your senses and learn the basics of describing and serving wine. You will also practise distinguishing between different grape varieties and how to recognize them. Each lesson will consist of theory, as well as practical exercises and tastings. We offer three different possibilities to attend this level. Weekend – We meet during the weekends, Saturday and Sunday mornings. After 5 weeks, we end with the exam. The Teaching Resources

At the first meeting, you’ll receive your course material, containing a textbook, study guide, self-assessment exercises, and summary sheet of the European School for Sommeliers. The program includes presentations, discussions and visual aids, as well as guided tastings and self-assessment exercises. Our experienced teachers will guide you through every step and be available to answer questions and encourage discussion both during lessons and outside of class.

Evaluation And Certification

Evaluation And Certification

The exams will be correct immediately and you will be given the results the same day.

If you fail the exam you can try again at any other exam-date within a 12 month period, as long as you have a valid membership card.

Is a written exam consisting of both open and multiple-choice questions covering th theme of the Level.

You have 120 minutes to answer. To pass, at least at 60% of the answers must be right

Terms & Conditions

  • The registration is binding and the costs will not be reimbursed.
  • Paid card membership 84,00€ for the current year is obligatory in order to receive the diploma.
  • Payments for the course: At the registration, to reserve your place: 3oo,00 €
    Last payment 400,00€  15 days before the first lesson.
