I am from Sweden, but have the last years lived in both Austria, Germany, The Netherlands and for the moment I’m living in Canada I am a certified Sommelier, educated at the Europäische Sommelier Schule in Germany, and teacher of the European School for Sommelier (the international sommelier school, currently present in 17 different countries) for which I train sommelier, hold courses for different level and conduct seminars and events as well as certify new sommeliers. In addition to education, training and didactic planning, I organizes and participates in different events, etc. I am a regular member of the jury for different international wine competitions. Apart from my native language Swedish I also speak English at business level and conversational German.
Umberto Galli Zugaro
In February 2016, I took over first the management of the Berlin branch of the European School for Sommeliers, and later the general representation for Germany.
I dedicated myself fully to the further development of our training programs and seminars, including wine tastings and samplings of gourmet products from various countries.
My motivation was driven by the ambition to contribute to the flourishing of international wine gastronomy culture, with particular attention to preserving and passing on fine gastronomic traditions, Teaching, confrontation, are wonderful part, my personal daily job. It is a profession that unlike oters, give you more, the more you give away .
My passion has led me to train sommeliers in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, experiencing the international nature of the world of wine.

I have been working in the restaurant and wine trade for 25 years, as well as a sommelier for wine seminars, staff training and tastings.
As a true Berliner, I completed my sommelier training at the local
branch of the German Wine and Sommelier School, graduating with an exam from
the IHK Koblenz.
Since June 2022, after successfully completing my training as a lecturer, I have been part of the team at the
European Sommelier School (ESS).
My credo is to share my impressions and knowledge of the infinitely diverse world of wine
in conversations and seminars with connoisseurs, those hungry for knowledge, the curious, colleagues and
friends.

Wine isn’t just a drink for me – it’s an adventure.
Since 2019, I’ve been working as a certified sommelier with a teaching qualification, driven by the desire to share my passion for wine with others.
I’ve been active in wine retail for over six years, working as a sommelier and wine consultant.
What I love most is guiding people as they take their first steps into the fascinating world of wine – with a listening ear, clear recommendations, and a genuine joy for discovery.
I have a special affection for the wines of Northern Italy – charming, full of character, and often surprisingly deep.
And then there’s Riesling: a grape that continues to excite me with every new expression, whether bone-dry or lusciously sweet.
You’ll often find me at tastings, trade fairs, and industry events – always on the lookout for new impressions, inspiring wines, and deeper knowledge.
I’m especially drawn to the underdogs of the wine world – small, often lesser-known producers who shine with individuality, passion, and personality rather than mass production or mainstream appeal.
To smell, taste, discover – and truly understand wine. That’s what excites me. And that’s exactly what I hope to pass on to others.

Alena Rath recommends European Sommelier School A fantastic school with Umberto as a very warm and insightful teacher on the subject of wine.
ottima scuola con professionalità ed estrema disponibilità. grazie infinite!
Thank you for my sommelier training at the European Sommelier School. Small working groups, some of which are very informal, impart in-depth knowledge. Particularly noteworthy is the focus on pairing wine with food. Even after completing all the courses, we are still in contact. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend this school. Whether for work or simply for pleasure, you truly have the opportunity to learn so much, not only through books and lectures, but also through tastings and the stories of occasional guests. Furthermore, Umberto is able to teach and convey his passion for wine with a unique lightness and charm. […]
